HEADSHOT TIPS, DO’s and DON’Ts
Your headshot should look like you. It has to sell your personality and looks.
General Tips:
• Tell me your expectations and intentions.
• Let me know what type of look you want.
• Drink lots of water and be well rested.
Actors and Models:
• Rehearse at home in front of a mirror to practice your poses and expressions. If you are having trouble with expressions, watch your face in the mirror while running lines from your favorite movie or show.
• Actors are hired to play a character and tell a story. Make sure your look allows you to play different characters and think how these characters would look (ie: the good/bad guy or the girl next door).
Don’t
• Do not wear white unless you are wearing it underneath something.
• Do not wear jewelry that will distract from your face.
• Don't wear loud stripes or patterns. Avoid herringbone. No short sleeve shirts.
• Don't wear a turtleneck because it crowds the face. A v-neck or collar shirt works best.
• Avoid large logos or branding.
• Don’t worry about shoes unless you specifically want a full-length look.
• Do not over-do your makeup.
• Don’t wear glitter, sparkles, rhinestones or sequins.
Do:
• Tell me the image you are trying to convey. What type of business you are in? What is your business culture?
• Wear clothes that are comfortable and that make you look and feel great. Have two or three changes of clothing to experiment with colors. You only need the top half for "head and shoulder" headshot. You will need an entire outfit including shoes for full-length.
• A simple black shirt/blouse/dress is often a good option. Darker clothes attract less attention and put the attention on your face and eyes.
• Solid colors are great.
• Blue/green/turquoise clothing can help emphasize blue, green or hazel eyes.
• A suite or jacket is great for men wanting a more professional look.
• Pay attention to details like layers, ties, belts and etc.
• Different necklines will change the apparent shape of your face. Bring a variety of different shirts/blouses to see what works best.
• BE YOURSELF!
• Ask me if you have any questions.
Jewelry:
• Keep your jewelry extremely simple. Small is better.
• Avoid jewelry that will distract from your face or looks dated.
• Remember, the image is about your face and not your jewelry.
Hair and Make-up:
• Make-up should be clean and natural.
• Your make-up and hairstyle should be exactly what you would wear at your profession or audition.
• Wear a heavy layer of translucent powder. Your face will appear flawless, the shine disappears, pores will seem smaller, the skin looks even and blush is smoother.
• Men may need base, concealer and powder for the session.
• Avoid shimmers or products with lots of sparkle or shine.
• Avoid frosts or garish colors.
• Don’t get a new haircut before the session. You may want to let it grow a bit or get used to the styling the new cut before the session.
• Do not try or use any new products on your hair, face or body the day before the session.
• Avoid over styling. Keep it simple.
• Ask if you require a makeup artist. I can introduce you to a few. You will need to make arrangements for their time and payment.
Arrive With:
• Hair styled and makeup already applied.
• Already dressed in first outfit.
